Subject:Nat Gonella Centenary
Posted by:sandman_jazz.
Time:10:43 pm.
2008 marks the centenary of Nat Gonella's birth. A working class British jazz hero!

Nat was born in Islington on March 7th 1908 and was the first British musician to establish a major reputation as a jazz soloist.

Jazz may have come to Britain in 1919 but through the 1920's and 1930's it was played at hotels, Restaurants and private parties from which the vast majority of the population were excluded.

When Nat left the Lew Stone orchestra at the Monsigneur Restaurant to play variety halls around the country - and make radio broadcasts - his jazz hit where it could be heard. He made the music accessible, hot and entertaining.

Nat Gonella almost singlehandedly broke black music on British ears.

Come his centenrary year little is planned in celebration of his life. You'd be pushed to find his recordings in the large record stores. The "largest" in the country, HMV Oxford Street, currently has one CD from this vast body of
excellent music which inspired a generation of jazz fans and musicians.

So, what's been in everyone's jazz rotation lately?
I've been listening to Empyrean Isles, Let My Children Hear Music, and Ah Um. (today)
But I've been lacking in the tea department. :P

And, wow! We have 21 members now!
I'm also thinking it's time for a layout change - requests, anyone?

Subject:Jazz & Tea
Posted by:din_din_dote.
Time:10:37 pm.
Tea and Jazz are two of my greatest passions, so I'm completely bewildered and excited that such a community exists.

I have a question for anyone: did you study Jazz at university or did your university studies involve Jazz in anyway? - and if so would you recommend doing that?

Anyway, it's good to be here.

Digital TV Channel BBC4 have been holding a season looking at Jazz in Britain, with a three part documentary giving an over view of the history of British Jazz. Whilst the Documentary does suffer from the Ken Burns syndrome of missing out details it's a very worthwhile show, focusing primarily on the music and talking to those directly involved. The missing elements are more due to time limits (it's three 1 hour episodes) but surrounding the shows theres been a wealth of archive material and classic concert material being broadcast. Sometimes I like being british.

Sunday (or was it Monday?) I bought three albums. Two of them were relevant to this community. Thelonious Monk - "Genius of Modern Music Vol. 2" and Archie Shepp - "Cry of My People". They are both fantastic. They get 2 stars out of 2.

On Wednesday I drank tea. It was white tangerine tea, from P.F. Chang's restaraunt. It was pretty good.

Hey, I opened up a community about six months ago to help people with improvisation and we've only just started to see life for the first time since the community opened. So, I'm looking for some new members to help keep things going.

Hi,
I'm Nick "The Sandman" from the United Kingdom. I've joined this community as two key words stuck out for me 'Tea' and 'jazz', a perfect combination if you ask me.

My interests in Jazz are very wide spread ranging from Jelly Roll Morton to Weather Report, with a special interest in sax players and pianists.

So an actually topic ummm....

What's the verdict on the Don Byron album Ivey-Divey?
